The ordinary wrist watch can hardly be called that, exactly. In fact the wristwatch is one very useful and functional accessory that is in fact as singular as anything can be. There are so many different variations and alternatives, for instance the Automatic watches, all having different options for depth of water resistance, size, functions, display and many more that set each particular type of watch apart from the rest. In this article, we’ll take a wider view at the life of the humble timepiece that has staked its claim on the wrists of millions of people from all parts of the world.
The original timekeeping instrument that was taken from the pocket watch and reduced in size to fit onto the wrist with a leather strap was a marvellous mechanism of intricate, tiny cogs and wheels that were kept in motion by the power of a wound spring coil. Some of the greatest examples of the wristwatch were produced by watchmakers in Switzerland and were capable of unbelievable time keeping accuracy.
Coming on to the twentieth century and there are not very many changes in wristwatches in particular apart from the innovative automatic watches, one of which was the Women’s automatic watch. These wonders of ingenuity were fitted with a movement winding mechanism which made it possible for the watch to remain wound just by being constantly worn. The swinging of the arm of the wearer was all it needed to keep it ticking.
It wasn’t until the late 1970s that new innovations occurred and the initial, affordable digital watches made their appearance in shops. They were a cute novelty that soon frustrated wearers. That’s because you were obliged to use your free hand to activate the display making it possible to tell the time. They were soon refined enabling the wearer to see the display without this annoying flaw.
Soon after that, the quartz crystal wrist watch showed up in the shops. These were powered by a small battery and never demanded winding. They were also incredibly accurate, but the true advancement in accuracy occurred towards the end of the 1980s with the appearance of atomic watches. They used a absolutely accurate electron pulse which gave the right time all the time.
At last, multifunction watches began to grow in popularity. Coming from the exciting realms of science fiction, a watch can now be a cellular phone, a walkie talkie, a radio, an MP3 music player, a micro computer, a games console, a voice recorder and they still find room to display the time!
To conclude, we have a concise, yet fluently explained and described life of the humble wrist watch exposed for all to see and understand. It is no wonder that this serviceable yet incredibly advanced timepiece has stood the test of time from its modest origins as an intricate invention of mechanical genius to its modern day equivalent that can be powered by just a minute battery or even recharged by the sun and keep time with an accuracy that is close to perfect. It’s hard to say that about all that many inventions that have been around equally as long as the not so common wrist watch!
